Thought I'd take a quick look. According to wikipedia the fatality rate was 0.5%. If this is right then regardless of how many it killed in the end surely it's not worse than something spreading around the world with a best case scenerio 1% fatality and a worst case scenario 3-4% fatality.
Those numbers are complete and utter bull%#t Richard and are just put out by the media to get clicks. Nobody has ANY idea how many people have been infected with this virus but it is almost certainly at least 10 x or maybe 100x the number of reported cases. Plus what is the excess mortality caused by the virus. Nobody talks about that either.....Is it 1.5x flu or 2x flu or 10x flu (not!). It has simply become a political tool to scare people and beat on those in government and people won't tolerate this crap for much longer.
'Mortality rate' is a meaningless statistic and every epidemiologist knows it. The blue ringed octopus is one of most lethal animals on earth. It's bite is nearly 100% fatal. Enough toxin to kill an elephant. Scary right? Except nobody has died of a blue ringed octopus bite in maybe 50 years so it's impact is basically zero. Contrast that with the common poisonous snakes in India. Nowhere near as venomous and there are effective antivenoms......those snakes kill 50,000 people a year and bite about 500,000. So what is worse?
Can't have it both ways....either there were ONLY 100,000 infections in China and thus the mortality was 2.5% OR true infections were millions and attributable mortality was next to nothing.
In the state where I live...which is in COMPLETE and UTTER shutdown as of yesterday 8,500 people tested only 297 of which were positive and nobody has died. Is this a rational response? No its effing insane.
I get it but what about potentilly overwhelming the NHS who can't cope with numbers of cases for this and completely unrelated issues, don't have enough masks, ventilators or beds? Or at least they won't have enough.
You made the point that people will die of unrelated conditions because of the mass hysteria here but isn't it also true that the more cases of COVID that become hospitalised mean that person with the unrelated issue becomes more likely to slip through the net and die as a result?

Looks like we're going on lockdown then. About time to be fair.
If you want to put this in perspective check out what happened in 1968....
I was a little lad in short trousers but I don't remember not going to school for two months and as for shutting down the whole bloody country people would have rioted. Same situation basically...pandemic virus, no vaccine, no treatment, millions and millions that time got sick and over a million people died. So no this isn't pandemic influenza...doesn't hold a candle to it.
World has lost all perspective (24 hour so called news cycle, scaremongering as a tactic to get government money, social media, whole generations griping about the lack of free wifi as if it is the apocalypse).

@john-folan think you may have caught it mate!

Boris Johnson has impressed me no end through this. No panic no drama. Just doing what his advisors tell him is the best course of action.
He looks like he hasn’t slept in a month. He may not be the leader all of us wants but he is the one we need.

@richard-latimer Last week I added 3 words to my blocked words list; Virus, covid & corona. Twitter is now surprisingly positive.
Haha. I can't do that but fairplay.

@neil-mallett Thats a really good idea, about to do this now!
I love this idea

FHG came in with last kick of the match I guess.
Keeping my over 1.5 goal trade alive as well rather than cashing out due to the trade being on the second half goal filters and the late goal filters. -
