@stuart-capstick Amazing introduction!
Welcome to the group, I love calling them 'Dick trades' good way to describe them.
I had a poisson method as well but got so bored doing the data daily - that I just keep it simple in the BTC stats now and have better results

Stuart Capstick
Newcastle upon TyneNovice. Started matched betting. Decided to follow an Acorns tip service. This went well until a run of seven losses (following Fibbonacci staking series), followed by a win then another run of eight losses. I then realised that I needed to rethink my staking and accept variance can be a pain. I didn't blow my bank but the staking was stupidly high.
Took up football trading a few months ago(and a little tennis). Have learned so much. Mainly that, as people on here say constantly, it's more about the execution than the strategy.
Now at the stage where I make small but steady profits (@£10 per day) and I'm very happy with that while I continue to learn.
I've learned to avoid "dick trades" as I call them. For example, laying, say Ajax for £10 at odds of 7 at half-time. While in itself that may not be a bad trade as stats may suggest a goal, with a bank of £100, it isn't the best idea. Yes, I have been that daft...
I then started on the U 2.5 market, believing that there would be value as most people bet on O 2.5. I made Poisson distributions for the low scoring leagues (France 2, Russian and Ukrainian leagues etc). This was profitable in the short time I employed it, but was a pain to maintain ( lifting results and tables from stats sites into Excel etc). It wasn't really trading; it was more bet and go.
Also learned to accept that a trade can be good in terms of stats and execution, but can lead to a loss. Also got rid of FOMO: there is always another game to trade.
I've developed a FHG filter, SHG filter, LTD filter, which are probably very similar to those of existing members. I'm paper trading a FH U 1.5 goals filter that looks promising, but I need a few more weeks before deciding if it is profitable. I'm more than willing to share any of these. Background: Neuroscience.
Joined to learn about trading. More than happy with what I've learned and very aware that there is do much more.
I suppose the main thing I want is to learn more.
Goals? If I've broken even after a year of trading, I'll be happy. If I can continue to make slow and steady gains, I'll be ecstatic. Ideally, I'd like a bank of strategies that can be profitable. I hope that I just continue to enjoy trading.

@brian-clifford Welcome to the group, great to have you here! If you get stuck need anything just shout buddy.

hi , my name is brian clifford and am originally from manchester(united) and i am now retired. I joined BTC to learn about football and horse trading strategies , at the moment i am doing match betting but it isn't producing like it used to.I've done some horses and footie trades but i really need to get on top of the footie stats.
-
@james-morris The horses are prime for automation, especially the strategies which are shared in the horse thread. I personally don’t have much knowledge on them (I’m more football based) but have got on ok with them. I’ve never used BA but some of the guys have switched from that to BFBM, which I’ve found to be decent

@james-morris
Stick with hat you have got, it's there already matey. If you work through it and think you need additional then cross that bridge as and when
Oh yes, there's a lot going on here so focus on what you want to get from the community.
-
Hi @Lee-woodman and @Ryan-Carruthers thanks for your welcome.
I'm like a kid in a sweetshop at the moment... What with the Acorns, BF Bot and everything else I'm finding it difficult to pick "one thing" as I want to jump in to all of them!
Think I'll ease off on building my own thing and focus on using the tools already out there and data readily available. No point in building something before I know what it is. So I'll focus on automation for horses as I've not succeeded at that yet, probably automated dobbing and give manual scalping a rest. Ideally I'd use Bet Angel automation as I already have that unless BF Bot(?) is going to make it easier.
-
@james-morris Welcome to the group, seems you will fit in really well here.
There is a couple of threads on automation as well which will probably tickle your fancy as well.

@james-morris welcome mate! Im just up the road from you, im often in Southport as my partners from there! I think you only need to know certain things about the sport; motivations, rules etc. I don’t think you need an in-depth knowledge of every team or league. Just pick a sport and one strategy in that sport then when that’s working for you pick another strategy to develop.
Good Luck!

Thanks Martin I'll check out those links. In my mind I feel football may be "easier" on my stress levels than horses and fit in better around a full time job. I tried a couple (my first ever) football lay the draw at half time trades (following the guide and picks in the email) last night and both profited so that was a nice introduction to the site. Made £6-7 profit but that's equivalent of a lot of 1 tick scalping trades on the horses and was much less effort.

@james-morris welcome mate! love Southport beach always go there on a free sunny day!
any q's just ask either in the sports threads or here: http://forum.betfairtradingcommunity.com/topic/648/trading-q-and-a-megathread-ask-us-anything
best advice i can give you is pick a sport and stick to one to start with, horses, cricket, football and tennis are the main ones that people can make a living from. I have written the best points of all four so you can get an overview as to which would suit you best!

Hi everyone, just signed up a couple of days ago and trying to find my way round - intro:
I'm James, mid forties, living in Southport.
I'm new to trading, in fact only placed my first ever bet in March this year when I started matched-betting. I've been using Bet Angel for the past month or so scalping horses, pretty much breaking even overall (the usual, earn a little, lose a bit more, earn lots of littles, lose some etc). I built some bank with matched betting (earning around £800-£900 profit a month) mainly concentrating on 2nd place refunds (William Hill) and each way no-lay value betting. I want to now use this bank to get into trading. I'm especially interested in automating trading and collating data.
My background is in analytics / computing. I've a degree in applied statistics and computing, and work in "big data" where I manage a team of developers building and supporting a Teradata data warehouse. Previous to this role I worked in decision analytics. I've basically been in managing IT development teams for many years so am not very hands-on with coding, which I miss so hope to get back into that under this venture. At worst, some of my team may find they get odd looking coding assignments over the next few months (I have a developer interested in working with me on this so can get some technical help).
I'm a bit overwhelmed with ideas, systems, books and tools at the moment so really need to focus on one thing at a time. I'm teaching myself Python at work (handy as we have some code in production system written in Python which needs updating so I have an excuse). Studying the Betfair programming and Betfair trading techniques books by James Butler.
I'm a complete idiot when it comes to all sports, never followed any so the whole thing of sports trading (and matched betting) was alien to me 6 months ago. I'm learning a lot, and that's why I joined this community as my original thought was to learn a bit about trading on football and I'd heard about someone blogging on their dobbing/horse strategies. I'm conscious that my lack of knowledge on the sports isn't helping, but also I have no bias or gut feeling about teams/horses etc so can gain insight from data.
First off I'd like to get some basic automation running in Bet Angel. I'd then like to focus on collating appropriate data sources and tools and building up datasets to drive my trading in whatever areas I choose to develop longer term. I've looked at various data providers (e.g. in-running trading tool, timeform, inform racing etc) but not pulled the trigger yet as not sure which bring benefit to what. Before all that though I want to get better at basics, and get my trading into profit to build some confidence.

@jarratt-perkins Wonder how many degrees are?
Mine was in Physiotherapy lol
My degree was in Theology!!

@dave-jessop its crazy isnt it how someone with maybe 2-3 years worth of actual working experience can just be overlooked by someone with no experience, only research of how to do it. Its why iv gone to uni to do something which is hands on and an actual skill instead of some sort of theory based work. That way i get experience and a qualification to fit both criteria
-
@dave-jessop spot on, however because they are increasing numbers, jobs are now requiring minimum entry of having some sort of qualification. Its becoming harder for those with just experience to get into these types of jobs. Its a vicious cycle which like you say is good for revenue
-
@jarratt-perkins i think your spot on there, every year the entry requirements to get in come down. Its just stats for government to show off. I do however believe that some universities and courses still have standards, its the students that actually pick a degree that will suit their career rather than those that pick it cause they enjoy the subject that get the most from it
-
Now it's about the ££££ so they let anyone in!
