Looking forward to being educated - love a decent glass of Red especially MAlbec but don't know much about it.

@john-folan you'll regret it
its nice to be back on here btw after a ridiculously busy summer .. I've always been lurking (and trading away)
I've had the privilege of working with wine in one way or another for many years, most recently writing a list for a property in France.. showing the French what a real wine list looks like
I've always been a big Burgundy fan, but likewise Bordeaux, Loire and Rhone as well as south of France.
Outside of France selected growers from Spain, Italy, USA and Australia//NZ too.
I've had a ball recently discovering wines of Bandol and wider Provence.. I even had the experience of making a vintage with a grower in Bandol - collecting and pressing the grapes left after the harvest which families are allowed to do to create their own cuvee.
Two key things (after which I will happily make some recommends over the next few days)
-
Its about the personality/background of the grower .. and what are they trying to achieve., some famous names live on their history with no effort = over priced and no magic, some are working their socks off for perfection - thats where the magic happens .. every grower, every year has decisions to make .. leave more grapes on the vine = more volume = more sales.. or prune hard for more concentration and hope you get the wine you want and sell for a price which justifies it..
-
look for the second wines of famous growers, or village wines of famous appellations .. many growers are frustrated by the rules of the appellation and so make second wines how they want wine to be which they are not allowed to name after the appellation because it doesn't fit the rules - but you end up with brilliant wine full of personality and great value..
More to come when I have a bit of time..

I always come back to this one. It just does it for me. Tastes even nicer if itโs aired for a couple of hours.
