Desktop/Laptop Trading Setup - What Are You Using?
-
Right folks, looking for some opinions/advice here.
After much swearing and threatening towards an inanimate object, I have come to accept that it may be time to upgrade/fix my trading set up. I'm not sure on how to proceed as up until this point I've seen and read different things from various folk with no real common thread.
I trade the nags using Bet Angel Pro and currently use an HP Pavillion g6 laptop on Windows 7 connected to a 20" monitor. I had been looking to upgrade my screen set up anyway but recently the laptop itself is becoming more problematic and its now starting to interfere with my trading and trading prep.
I was thinking about upgrading to a gaming laptop but unsure if this is completely necessary. I am not a tech guru by any stretch of the imagination (and yes, I know you immediately lose man points for admitting you don't know something but its fine...I don't or wouldn't ask for directions...thats just too far ) so I could use a bit of advice from folk in the know.
What desktop/laptop setup do you have?
Thanks in advance

@angus-macleod Not even gaming matey Macs are like Β£1200 for Β£600 you can get a mental PC with loads of power.
Ahhhh yes it is a pain but I've always had one so I sort of had to make it work and then I got used to trading the way I do
-
@Ryan I agree Apple stuff does look the business. Yeah I had read also that some folk had to install different software on theirs because of various compatibility issues so that put me off a bit hence why I decided to go for a windows based setup.
Stupidly powerful windows I'm guessing you're meaning the likes of gaming setups? They do look quite cool (I am not a gamer...yet) and I am quite fond of my organs and don't want to have to sell them in order to buy a gaming PC
-
@angus-macleod They are totally different but they are easy to use, I find it easier to use than a windows and it looks better
It all depends though on the software you want it to run as most software you download is heavily windows focused and won't work on Mac and you'll need to install windows if you want to run it - which defeats the object as for the same amount you'd get a stupidly powerful windows.

Never used an Apple laptop myself but have heard they are good but work completely different to a Windows laptop? I've only ever had phones and a tablet from Apple but could be tempted down the line to try one and see.

I also use an apple laptop but then I'm not a very sophisticated trader at this stage!
Someone told me about this website the other day: www.ourdeal.co.uk
Does anyone have any experience with them? Is it too good to be true?
seems legit https://uk.trustpilot.com/review/ourdeal.co.uk

@oliver-preen Cheers for the input buddy, I do like the idea of minimalization but I find that because I solely trade the gee gees I need more than one screen for the info I use hence why I have a dual monitor setup now. Kudos on the digital nomad lifestyle though

Thought I would chip in on this threadβ¦ Iβm a complete minimalist and my situation is quite unique.
I downsized everything I had in life to fit into a car with the intention of living a life on the road campervan style. I wanted to be able to trade from anywhere so with this in mind I use a 13β MacBook Pro laptop running trading software and an iPad mini to watch the games on. Just to give a different perspective -
@martin-futter The desktop I managed to get for Β£749 (listed as out of stock on their website the following day so they weren't kidding about the deal ending)
The 2 screens and cables came to Β£552 so all in about Β£1300 so I am pretty chuffed with that.
Only slight drawback is that the screens will be here long before the PC as I've been told it should be anywhere from the 20th-26th this month and I was NOT willing to fork out another 500 smackeroonies for a quicker delivery date on a lesser machine.

@angus-macleod good work how much was it out of interest?
-
@ian-wylie I actually opted for a desktop in the end along with 2 27" screens. A mate of mine found a good deal on a Dell Inspiron 3881 which was expiring at midnight so I jumped on it.

Windows 10
-
10th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700 processor(8-Core, 16M
Cache, 2.9GHz to 4.8GHz) -
8GB, 8Gx1, DDR4, 2933MHz
-
512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive
-
NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 1650 SUPER(TM) 4GB GDDR6
I specifically got this for trading purposes only so will only have bare minimum software/ programs on it; essentially being trading and screen recording software and thats it really, nothing else.

If you're going to be using Windows then I would recommend going for at least 16GB of RAM. Windows can be very draining on computer hardware so having some extra RAM might help prevent any issues at a critical time. It will also give you a bit of future proofing and hopefully increase the life span of your new laptop.

Gaming is not necessary.
Most important things are:
Your processor (and it's speed) look for reviews on any you find.
Ideally I would want 8gb RAM but 4 can suffice.
You want full Windows 10, decent enough storage 1tb+ ideally,
Try to get two monitors if you can, you can pick a second hand one up on ebay fairly cheap (I go two of mine for Β£20 each) just go collect them.Don't clog it up with loads of other programmes, I have an insane amount of games etc downloaded on my PC and it's pretty much given up the ghost now! I should probably get one myself.
Your first line is completely wrong. . Gaming is always necessary

@angus-macleod I've replied in the other thread

@Martin-Futter replied in the coaching thread before I saw this
