Hi to all,
Just a general question regarding this season and bits of last being played behind closed doors.
With regards to future data collection, would you just write this season off as an odd one, these games don't really reflect what generally happens?
Or could this season be used as an advantage with this degree of hindsight?
Personally, quite a few of my go to trades have gone tits up this season, but, hey ho.
Just interested to hear the thoughts of people far more experienced than me looking towards next season and hopefully normality.

@keith-anderson Yep, seeing what we want to see. Dangerous game that!

I think all data is good in the right context. It's one of the reasons why I keep notes and watch things that others might miss about players etc... keep a note off all these things and constantly question is my original thought true on this?
I think there will be some huge performances when crowds get back in from some of these lesser confidence players too - as the fans have seen how they have performed they might give them a bit more backing - yet we know what fans are like.
I agree with Ryan. Data is data whether we like it or not. How we interpret the data is down to the individual. I think it we leave this data out, we would be in danger of manipulation.
Just my thoughts

I can't find the article (I think it was on The Athletic which is a subscription) but here's something similiar
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/01/sports/soccer/soccer-without-fans-germany-data.html
Interesting to see that the number of yellow cards for the home team has gone up. Overall though I don't think it's having a huge impact because you're still seeing teams you would expect to be top of the league at the top. Teams that were struggling with fans are still struggling without. Only exception is West Ham who seem to be doing better when their fans aren't booing them or staking the corner flag into the centre circle!

I did see somewhere that since there's been no fans away wins have gone up. I'll try and find the article that showed that and I'll share it. We've also had some very high scoring games (Man Utd vs Spurs, Palace vs Liverpool, Southampton vs Man Utd)
@James-Heathcote-0 as for WBA, that's a good away day apart from the single train back into Birmingham. As a Palace fan I really enjoyed your last game. If VAR is going to disallow brighton goals I'm all for it!
Hehe, we deffo got lucky against fake Albion!!
Strange season for Palace, you kinda look great one week and bang average the next, obviously no danger of going down, but where do you see the club in 5 years?
I know there is talk of increasing Selhurst capacity, so that would indicate ambition?
We've got 2 American owners who came in and promised to rebuild our stadium and training ground, but have since lost interest. I don't even think they've been to Selhurst Park. We've got something like 12 players, the manager and his coaching staff all out of contract at the end of the season. The lads are playing like they're seeing out their notice period. The fans are blaming Hodgson but I don't see what other option he has. He's also got us our highest ever PL points! To quote a former chairman of ours "Be careful what you wish for".
The trouble with clubs of our size (Palace, West Brom, Norwich, etc.) is that it's all fun getting promoted, then a season of pain trying to stay in the league. Every team outside the top 6 will get relegated eventually, I just hope we make some long term improvements while we can.

Slightly different question. I have only known trading with covid (started in June 2020). The work I have done on data since then, should it be kept and continued on once things go back to 'normal' or should I draw a line (keep the data) but effectively restart my testing?

@james-heathcote-0 Likewise Jim - I was privileged to attend Cyril Regis memorial at the Hawthorns a couple of years back .. that was an emotional day. It may be a shithouse but its a proper club
Your keeper is the perfect example. Likewise good luck with the trades and more importantly your health mate.
Thanks Mark,

Was there that day Mark, big Cyrille was the only bloke in my memory that got a round of applause wearing a Wolves top at the Hawthorns!

Same boat as you Mark regarding trading.
I've mucked about for a couple of years and I'm now in quite poor health and very bored, so I thought I would pay a little bit more attention.
Get what you are saying about individual footballers make-up.
At my local shithouse (WBA), there does seem to be those that care, and those that don't.
As for support, again, our keeper seems so much more confident with nobody looking at him; believe it or not, he has been a stand out for us this year despite getting hammered regularly.
Anyway, good luck bud with yer trades
Jim.

@james-heathcote-0 I can't pretend to talk from an experienced traders perspective because I am very much a newbie. However having spent time within football and certainly from very recent conversations I think the problem is its impossible to generalise. From club to club and even within clubs there are a huge variety of personalities who have, and are reacting very very differently to the current reality.
So for example some players think its a disgrace they are being made to play.. putting them at "risk" .. they'd prefer to be at home, their motivation must be questioned. Others are thriving without crowds - the ones that we all know exist who the crowd get on their back as soon as they make an error - the freedom is seeing them thrive in home matches where they'd normally be in their shell.
Then as soon as a team is doing ok - in the promotion race for example suddenly everyones on a collective mission and all that stuff is forgotten. Its also down to managers and coaches and their opinions/motivation. You'd be amazed at how sensitive some of these people are.
Let me give one small example of a possible impact - a team in one league who the away team opposition historically, if they have any nouse, set out to dominate the home team because the crowd are notorious for getting on their back from very early on. That team have had a pretty poor home record in recent years but now have won more home games this season to date than for the whole season in the last four years - coincidence? How to measure that and record it trading wise I'll leave to the experts ..
