This needs a thread. It’s something I have struggled with and do sometimes on certain strategies. (How many times have you cut stakes after a small downturn and missed out on a big upswing or vice versus).
This can be about bank sizes, how to grow banks etc.
Added by Martin - A couple of articles if you haven't read yet you should:

Great thread this buddy, very good. Needed as well. Interesting point in laying as well, I wonder how many people have blown banks laying mainly or backing?
Laying can get you in a whole world of trouble, it's important to work through the staking - love this thread.

@John-Folan great idea! I've added the two articles I have written to help people on this in the OP.
Brilliant, thank you. We can keep adding useful stuff there?

Good thread idea as it’s such an hugely important but very tricky subject! Personally I don’t lay above 3.5 (at the moment) so laying a point gives reasonable and acceptable liability but when laying at 6/7/10 etc then it obviously becomes harder. The ideal position is to develop a mindset and system whereby every trade you place isn’t relative to the previous run of results. I think staking shouldn’t be change too regular or you could be staking higher at the wrong times and conversely lower at the wrong times so resetting the amount monthly seems like a better idea, and going up no more than say 10% gives a better chance of steadier growth

@stuart-capstick That's what I do, staking based on current bank roll rather than keeping the same until reach a certain milestone although can see the merits of both

With regard to missing out on the upswing, does anyone suggest just keeping to a percentage of whatever your current bank is as opposed to a percentage of starting bank until it is doubled?
E.g. starting bank £1000
Current bank £1400
Back bets at £14
Lays at, say £35 (2.5%) or £70 (5%)Instead of backing at £10 (laying at £20 to £50) until £2000 is reached.

Rate this thread highly. This is probably the next big hurdle once you find consistency in the markets. Its still something i test even being full time, risk reward and also amount of liability compared to bank

It is an important topic, get your staking wrong and its a one way ticket to blown bankrolls.
My approach is I've set myself up a spreadsheet which will work out my staking for the day based on my available bankroll: -
Although I have shown up to 10%, I'm only risking 1% for single trades and 2% split stakes liabilities when both backing or laying
Completely agree with what your when raising lay bets especially in horse racing which is one of a number of things stop me getting involved. As you say if your laying a horse its generally going to be a lot higher liability than in other sports.
@martin-futter has mentioned the "Maria" staking system in the past but from what I can work out you need a significant bankroll to start with although I could be wrong on that.
My main two sports for trading are Football and Tennis. For football I don't like laying anything above 2.5 and in Tennis if your ever regularly laying at odds above 1.4/1.5 then your doing something wrong.

I’ve just recently lowered my stakes back to what they initially were a month or so ago. Just so happens that my results have improved slightly since doing that. I’m favouring the long term approach with staking plans now, with it being likely that I’ll review my bank and staking plan every 4 months.
On the lays, I tend to stick to the same liability with each trade. I find it easier to manager and it also takes a lot of unceccesary pressure of the trade in my opinion. I know people view it differently but it definitely works better for me.
It’s definitely an important topic of discussion this though. Can definitely have a big impact on your overall results.
Massively. There’s a lot of staking methods as well. Maria Staking probably being the most famous. Looking forward to carrying this on. Staking I think is as important if not more so than all the other aspects of becoming a profitable trader.

So for example people go on about 100 point banks. Now this is fine for most backing strategies as you are only risking 1 point at a time.
However, when it comes to laying it’s a different matter. If you are laying at 5’s then a drawdown in the 20’s(possible) could blow your bank.
So this begs the question how much is enough and then how does this impact you if you are growing a bank?
Standard betting protocol is usually 100 point bank then double stakes when you double your bank. Again this can work well for backing but not laying which most of us do.
The floor as they say is open.
