@Dan-MacKinnon ..tut tut ..mouth is for eating, nose is for breathing!! Amazing what you learn with a breathing specialist!! I always thought in through the nose out through the mouth...that didn't go well for me when I answered. I now do things like box breathing in for 5seconds, hold for 5 seconds and out for 5 seconds, it has taught me how to breathe with just my nose..it was a bit weird for a start thou!

@Karl-Pick yeah that sounds interesting. I noticed I got burnt out doing BJJ and later found out I've got a deviated septum, but it seems that's quite common. I've also noticed that I'm a mouth breather when I go for a run!

@Dan-MacKinnon try doing Nidra Yoga..its about breathing, muscles and relaxation but laid down. My specialist got me into it to help me breathe, have to say I fall asleep on a 20minute cycle but have found it great for relaxation and breathing, I can send you the link if you like as there is some real weird takes on Youtube or research yourself, then you find out how weird some are! You need to be in a quiet room thou.

I've just finished reading Breath by James Nestor. I think it'll be another "Why We Sleep" book and breathing might become the new trend (as weird as that is to say)

100% the best purchase I've ever made! It's amazing, the buzz you get from it out of this world.

It also quietens the mind for me, I'm with @Adam a cold shower is actually harder the shock of those is worse than this.

    Here's me in it....

Which reminds me, now I've finished the house I need to do the garden.

So @Ryan and I have taken the (cold) plunge and got one of these each:

    0_1676017243435_6b28faab-f296-4440-aaa3-255a7c6d34ec-image.png

Only £100 or so, best purchase I've made in ages.

A couple of times a week (not on training days as it can hamper the gains), I do a few rounds of Lumi -> hot tub -> Lumi -> hot tub etc. The buzz is phenomenal and I feel so centered afterwards. Dopamine x 1000 🤯 I used it for the first time last Friday and it was the best Friday night since my younger raving days :face_with_tears_of_joy:

Totally different kettle of fish to the cold showers. To be honest for me, the initial shock of the cold shower is actually worse. But you get much, much colder in this so it's more of an endurance game.

It just sits in the garden and I take pot luck on how cold it's going to be on any given day. There is actually some science behind doing it that way rather than trying to control the temperature, as your dopamine pathways love being surprised.

Right now there's ice floating on the top, so I'm guessing my dip will be quite fun today :face_with_tears_of_joy:

That's a mega way of looking at it, the day can't get any worse!

I’ve been finishing my showers cold in the morning after the gym, so maybe 4 per week. One benefit which wasn’t told to me was that it’s a sure fire way to make sure your day can’t get any worse 😂

Seriously though they’re actually decent once you get used to them. I tended up that much during the first time that I swear I got fully body DOMS the day after!

@Martin @Keith-Anderson Lower back pain is horrible, I've had my fair share (and surgery). The most common cause is anterior pelvic tilt. So if you imagine some took hold of your hips each side and tipped them forward. This causes an over curving of the lower spine which, in turn, causes your pain.

Loads of reasons that can cause this but some of the more common ones are sitting too much for too long and with bad posture, being overweight, weak core.

Core exercises will probably help you out a lot, don't just do planks though. I would have thought Martin's core would be pretty decent though as tennis is hard on core muscles.

You might want to look into some simple glute and hamstring exercise to strengthen them.

Yep strengthen that posterior chain (the back) Glute bridges, Romanian deadlifts, core work.

For the last decade I've always had discomfort in my back. It isn't pain, just discomfort. I've found walking too far or too much causes it. Standing for long periods of time does it too.

Losing a bit of weight actually lessened the discomfort.

Anyway, I've started core exercises on Apple Fitness +. The results inside a week are impressive. Rarely have the discomfort now.

I don't know what fancy shower you guys have but mine just gives me the temperature.

In the winter, I admit, I have mine around 40 degrees. The coldest it goes is 14 but so far I've managed about 24 without whining too much.

It's also a rubbish shower that is like standing up a cold tap.

24 what? Fahrenheit?! Because 24 Celsius is like a tropical day here in Belfast!! You must be a soft southerner?!

Haha! I mean we're talking about water coming out the tap, not heat emitted from the sun.

Then again, it does explain why I've been getting a tan each time I shower 😆

Mine doesn't show the temperature, I just turn it all the way to the left (full cold) and get in and see what happens.

@ryan My preferred method of dealing with it is saying "jesus christ motherf*** holy sh** that's cold argh wtf is wrong with me crap".

It always catches me out when summer's over as the "C" is a lot more "C" in winter than it is in summer :face_with_tears_of_joy:

@dan-mackinnon I've noticed that as well, when I started I could get to 3 on the shower, after a day or so of that I was like 'hey, this isn't bad.'

I can get to the C now which is the lowest it will go! My wife thinks I am mental, I have found singing a song you like and know the words too helps as well - takes my mind off it!

At the moment I am singing Family Madrigal as Isla wants it on repeat and I know the words lol
