Food/Diet and training hobbies
-
OK so after a few conversations with various people on the forum there seems to be a fair few of us with a personal sporting hobby and/or an interest in food (I do love a box of Krispy Kremes)/ diets and nutrition.
So use this thread to discuss anything food/diet related and any sporting hobbies/training goals etc.
What sports/athletic activities (keep it clean!) do you participate in? What would you like to try? what did you used to do and what was your experience like?
What 'diet' ideas do you follow? What have you tried? Was it for a specific reason? Did you like it/find it tough/hate it?
Please keep things friendly, in the spirit of the BTC community. There are no 'wrong' things. I have seen and heard all the anti meat/anti vegan raging to last me a lifetime. We are all open minded and helpful here at BTC, hopefully not just in trading.

@Akiva-Anderson my wife says I have ADHD I think lots more people have it than we think. I like your idea of more looking down the natural route for medications rather than the **** doctors try and prescribe just to get you out of the door!
ADHD has also been nicknamed the entrepreneurial gene

@Akiva-Anderson This is a big talking point in our household at the moment as we strongly suspect our 8 year old has it. The first podcast I listened to on the subject suggested looking at the family history. Now, it seems my wife shows some tendencies towards it, and so do I....although Im certainly not the on the hyperactive/impulsive side of things. In fact, Lions mane would probably put me straight to sleep
If a child has ADHD there's an 80% one of the parents has it.
In Northern Ireland, there is about 10% of the school-aged population that has ADHD. That equates to around 40,000 children. If we use the 4% of adults living with ADHD, then that is 70,000 adults in Northern Ireland with the condition. Not even 20% of those would be aware they had the condition. A large percentage of adults would be on Anti-depressant, Anti-anxiety or even Anti-psychotic medications

As many people know, I have ADHD. I believe quite a lot of people do, but they’re just not aware of it.
I’ve been taking ADHD medication for over 20 years. I’ve never liked the way it made me feel, but it certainly helps with concentration.
I’ve also been looking for an alternative to ADHD meds and I’ve never found it. I’ve spent thousands on supplements, including CBD oil, but have never found something to take the the edge and help me relax…until now.
I’ve been taking Lions mane capsules alongside Maitake. I’ve got these from my local Holland & Barrett store. I take them twice a day. I can’t believe how laid back I am lately.

@Tony-Hastie Think the ultra marathon I would probably be breathing through my arse by the end!!!
-
@Dan-MacKinnon ...just 5 minutes per day.
It's all NEW to me and always thought it a pile of s**t until I got ill!!All bloody weird but it is helping, I was always a 100%, Work, Run 50 miles a week, play sport, exercise and enjoy and life life to the full.
NOW, I do breathing, Nidra Yoga and something called Qi Jong. Trying Anything to try and get better, even done Oxygen chambers!!
Wish I'd known about some of these when I was fit as they do help and improve healthy people as well.

Ive run a few ultra marathons over the years and the ultra community rave about nose breathing. For me Ive used it when Ive forgotten my heart rate monitor and need to regulate the speed of a run, its really good for that(although apparently you can "train" yourself to run faster nose breathing). Ill tell you when it doesnt work though...when youre bunged up with the monthly cold the kids have brought home from school/nursery. If you can breath at all you just cover yourself with a stream of snot
-
@Karl-Pick how often and how long do you do that for? I guess focusing on breathing has been happening for years with meditation
-
@Dan-MacKinnon ..tut tut ..mouth is for eating, nose is for breathing!! Amazing what you learn with a breathing specialist!! I always thought in through the nose out through the mouth...that didn't go well for me when I answered. I now do things like box breathing in for 5seconds, hold for 5 seconds and out for 5 seconds, it has taught me how to breathe with just my nose..it was a bit weird for a start thou!
-
@Karl-Pick yeah that sounds interesting. I noticed I got burnt out doing BJJ and later found out I've got a deviated septum, but it seems that's quite common. I've also noticed that I'm a mouth breather when I go for a run!
-
@Dan-MacKinnon try doing Nidra Yoga..its about breathing, muscles and relaxation but laid down. My specialist got me into it to help me breathe, have to say I fall asleep on a 20minute cycle but have found it great for relaxation and breathing, I can send you the link if you like as there is some real weird takes on Youtube or research yourself, then you find out how weird some are! You need to be in a quiet room thou.
-
I've just finished reading Breath by James Nestor. I think it'll be another "Why We Sleep" book and breathing might become the new trend (as weird as that is to say)

100% the best purchase I've ever made! It's amazing, the buzz you get from it out of this world.
It also quietens the mind for me, I'm with @Adam a cold shower is actually harder the shock of those is worse than this.
Here's me in it....
Which reminds me, now I've finished the house I need to do the garden.
-
So @Ryan and I have taken the (cold) plunge and got one of these each:
Only £100 or so, best purchase I've made in ages.
A couple of times a week (not on training days as it can hamper the gains), I do a few rounds of Lumi -> hot tub -> Lumi -> hot tub etc. The buzz is phenomenal and I feel so centered afterwards. Dopamine x 1000 I used it for the first time last Friday and it was the best Friday night since my younger raving days :face_with_tears_of_joy:
Totally different kettle of fish to the cold showers. To be honest for me, the initial shock of the cold shower is actually worse. But you get much, much colder in this so it's more of an endurance game.
It just sits in the garden and I take pot luck on how cold it's going to be on any given day. There is actually some science behind doing it that way rather than trying to control the temperature, as your dopamine pathways love being surprised.
Right now there's ice floating on the top, so I'm guessing my dip will be quite fun today :face_with_tears_of_joy:

That's a mega way of looking at it, the day can't get any worse!

I’ve been finishing my showers cold in the morning after the gym, so maybe 4 per week. One benefit which wasn’t told to me was that it’s a sure fire way to make sure your day can’t get any worse
Seriously though they’re actually decent once you get used to them. I tended up that much during the first time that I swear I got fully body DOMS the day after!

@Martin @Keith-Anderson Lower back pain is horrible, I've had my fair share (and surgery). The most common cause is anterior pelvic tilt. So if you imagine some took hold of your hips each side and tipped them forward. This causes an over curving of the lower spine which, in turn, causes your pain.
Loads of reasons that can cause this but some of the more common ones are sitting too much for too long and with bad posture, being overweight, weak core.
Core exercises will probably help you out a lot, don't just do planks though. I would have thought Martin's core would be pretty decent though as tennis is hard on core muscles.
You might want to look into some simple glute and hamstring exercise to strengthen them.
Yep strengthen that posterior chain (the back) Glute bridges, Romanian deadlifts, core work.
