@sam-maccuaig Let's do a new thread 100%
-
@sam-maccuaig Probably safest thing to do although I am too much of a dinosaur with forums etc to lead it lol
-
@matt-wood new thread? I'm always interested
-
-
@sam-maccuaig Of course he did! I had totally forgotten that happened. haha that explains it
-
@matt-wood Mussolini invaded for a few years and left a lot of italians there. Best Italian meal I've ever had was a place called Castellis in Addis Ababa
-
@sam-maccuaig Pasta?! wouldnt have thought that. Learn something new everyday
-
@matt-wood haha yes 200k kcal should keep me going for a while!! Impossible, it's all fermented bread and beans and stuff, and funnily enough a lot of extremely good pasta
-
@sam-maccuaig yea it does make a lot of sense for runners like you guys. Average healthy person walks around with approx 200'000 cals of fat reserves. should be plenty for a run like that.
I have used keto with a few different clients and whilst I do think it is a decent system (done correctly) it doesnt suit everyone.
I can imagine Ethiopia would be mega hard to do keto! All cereals and pulses there!
-
@matt-wood Keto is a huge thing in the Ultra scene after Zach Bitter set the 100mile all time record. It makes total sense to run on fat reserves and avoid the bonk, during lockdown Michael Mcknight ran 100 miles with zero calorie intake from fat adaptation. The issue I have is balancing it with everyday life. I tried Keto for a few months but I take clients out for dinner and travel a lot for my work, hard to find Keto meals in Ethiopia!
-
@sam-maccuaig 9min mile ave is not too shabby at all! looking at about 5 hours then
From a nutritionist pov eating whilst exercising is such a no no but like I said ultra running is a unique challenge in terms of calories. Only sort of other sport I can ever think compares is long distance biathlon events.
Personally I would just be chucking everything back up instantly lol.
The guy I used to help struggled with food and we tried him out switching to a full on keto diet 3mnths before his event then he stuck to just a few fats and salt tabs on the run. He found his performance increased loads. I would imagine it is just what suited him and his body though so might not work for everyone.
Best of luck in the run

@ryan-carruthers thanks mate! Highly recommended if anyone is on the fence about doing something like that. Eventually your feet heal and all you can think about is the next one
-
@sam-maccuaig mate that amazing, unreal!!
So interesting to hear from somebody that has done something like that and planning for something else, I wish you all the best!
-
@matt-wood Yes continuous running, I'll be aiming for a 9 min mile pace average for the event. I'm pretty basic with my nutrition, I eat about 300 cal per hr of whatever I can keep down with a focus on carbs and fat, then I take salt tabs for cramps etc. Go to is normally pork pies and sweets!

@ryan-carruthers This coming march I mean, but I did the Welsh 3000's a month ago. Every peak in Snowdonia over 3000ft, 16 tops in total over 3 mountain ranges. Mix of running & hiking 32 miles over 14.5hrs
