@john-hurst from my experience best practise is use the stats software to find your games, personal preference this one but - further research ie players, form etc. This part eliminates you then hunting for trades from a massive amount of games.
Then you go inplay and watch to see what happens. If the game is performing as expected you then turn to price. Price is key. It can save a bad trade and maximise a good one. This for me is trading or value betting, whatever term it is doesnt matter p/l is all that matters long term.
Your right tho the as they see it is part of the inplay side and probably is the biggest impact of how you make money long term from strategies. However for me the other stuff adds so much to my profits and cuts silly trades alot. Over time with experience of hundreds of markets youll begin to know what to look for so you can add other comps in etc. There would be nothing wrong with you value betting some would say LCS or FHGs are value betting anyway mate as you dont trade out type thing. Dont be down beat tho mate, trading isnt always sexy sometimes it can be a grind but over the long term it should be consistent compared to punting.

I've definitely had a few days where I've fared better putting money on something I can see unfold that wasn't on any filter or pre match info. Surely that's a testament to the amount of games we invariably end up watching? It's made me watch and understand games a lot better.

@gary-brown as long as your not trading for the wrong reasons like hope or a punt then trading your own team is actually pretty good, you have a good understanding of how the game is going. Celtic need a win tonight, so were always going to overexpose themselves to get one back. Taking off brown meant they had no cover at the back and counter would be easier, and thats exactly how the goal happened. The only hard bit is the actual result but the trade was still the same selection process as normal.
