Corruption in sport
-
I have been pondering if i should post this because i wonder if it could have a negative impact on newbies.
I am very synical a lot of the time about honesty in sport and ill give a recent example where i made money on this synical position.
PSG needed 1 point to win the league this year at the point they entered into 2 away games before the next home fixture. I said to my friend (i know, im boasting, i have a friend) that PSG would not win the league until they were at home so they had full control over the jubilation that follows securing the title.... I was right and also layed PSG to win those away game with a healthy back bet on the home game.
My question is, does the idea or hint at corruption alter anyones trading? stats are great but not the be-all and end-all and i wonder if this is something people consider?
I love to watch the snooker but i honestly do not think pro snooker is legit at all. We see Ronnie getting battered by an armature and the list of people investigated (not convicted) of match rigging is longer than a long thing thats won the world record for being long - it is quite a substantial list.
Thoughts and comments would be great on this

@richard-latimer getting on this now then!

Has anyone used the sofa score app and the chat in there for each game? You'd think the majority of games were fixed. All you see when results aren't going to plan is....mafia, fixed, sold this game....... followed by aaaarrrrgggghhhh ffs home are s**t. Never again. Bye bye money. It's actually quite comical.

@martin-futter
Agreed. You can't police it effectively and right now it just favours those who are better cheats.
Biggest problem in US sports is that spread betting is so popular and points shaving in something like basketball is so easy to do and yet almost impossible to prove. Miss a couple of free throws to make sure your team wins by less than 15 or whatever. Only people that give a rip are the gamblers and who are they going to complain to?

@ryan-carruthers I love the NFL bans for substance abuse 4 games lol no incentive not to keep doing it and never ever dropped from their team! may as well just let athletes take what they like at this point, it would be better for sport in the end esp the Olympics which has gone from one of my favourite sporting events to something I barely take an interest in when it is on.
-
@charles-cartwright yep, how many times do you hear of an American sports star test positive and they kick off saying everyone is doing it lol

@daniel-r reality is fixes are extremely rare and almost always dead obvious (think Davydenko being world number 4 and odds against vs world number 150 or whatever it was) or the Italian games at this time in the season where a draw is odds on!
Motivation and nerves are a much bigger factor in what you are referring to, look at Juve and PSG they have both had the titles won since September let's be honest. At elite level sports you only have to take your eye off the ball for a second and you can lose, so if you don't really need to win you are unlikely to be at your very best all of the time. Remember PSG were still playing quality professional footballers, not a local parks team and they were playing away from home, PSG also lost the French cup final so it shows like every team they have their flaws.
I think if you avoid the obvious and I will say again extremely rare occasions where the odds are so far away from reality that corruption is a concern, you will be fine.
Totally agree. Even when they do occur they are mostly in pretty obscure and low liquidity markets where it is easy to manipulate the odds and are regularly spotted and offenders caught.
Far more likely in US sports where sports gambling is virtually illegal and thus there is no transparency to what is going on behind the scenes.
The use of performance enhancing drugs is a different matter entirely and whilst it may technically 'corrupt' the purity of sport (I think that is actually debatable since it has been going on since time immemorial) the 'advantage' is baked in to the probability of success.

@luke-ridger Didn't one of the members post a really good blog post about it a few years back, think when on the Facebook group with the information about how it all didn't add up was a great read to be fair.
-
@luke-ridger yeah you just need to look up Operation Puerto scandal in Spain, and it starts to make you question a whole generation of greats from Spain. Massive cover up!
I was always wary of how quickly Nadal recovered from big injury’s -
One of the biggest dopers in sport is Rafa Nadal, but huge cover up assuming because Nike didn't want to take a multi million pound hit on the share price has meant that it never came to the surface, you speak to anyone in the sport and they know, infact an LTA player got disciplined because he tweeted it.
-
@daniel-r I have heard rumours about sport all over and I know first hand that some players have had others do the drug test for them lol! Mental!!
Good documentary on Netflix called Icarus as well on doping

Im very sceptical of certain leagues in football, especially countries which are considered corrupt countries. If corruption is a big part of the culture of the country then i would expect this spreads to other areas where money is involved and i certainly wouldnt expect a clean governing body to oversee football. It hasnt been a huge factor for me yet but its certainly becoming a bigger part of my consideration. Serie B in Italy is a classic example of this and as a result i rarely trade it. Im sure the list could go on quite extensively!
