Horse Racing Strategies Megathread

I've been using the Pace Letter L to P Back program for a while. Many thanks to Wayne for posting it, working well.
It crossed my mind that , whilst extreme odds selections will win big 1% or 2% of the time , the net result of having them there may not be positive.
A couple of tinkers predicted catastrophe , but I found that restricting selections to F1 to F5 resulted in a marked improvement in back test results.
Results on selections for today ( 10/08/22 )show no change from original program , but long term back test numbers rise from ish £2K to ish £3K.
Time will tell if that happens in forward testing. -

EUKHost
Which plan do you use with them Adam?

Once I'm happy with that I'll look into getting a VPS.
EUKHost are a really good UK-based Windows VPS provider. Never had a single second of downtime with them and their support are very helpful.

@keith Lovely stuff, thanks again Keith

@keith Good man, thank you mate.
I assume the spec of the Windows 4 plan is more than enough for your automation, or have you noticed any small issues that would suggest you might need to upgrade at all?
I'm clueless about this stuff so you could just lie to me and I would be none the wiser :face_with_tears_of_joy:
Yes mate it's fine for BFBM I've not had any issues with it. At one point I had over 70 bots running in demo and it didn't flinch.
Also running some MT4 trading systems for forex as well. -

@keith This seems far more reasonable than one I looked at before Keith, which was around £45 per month
Out of curiosity, which plan do you use with them matey?
Hi mate I'm on the windows 4 plan

Exactly this mate - it's amazing how much better a set liability feels, but also how good the results can look as the set liability compounds.
-
Small Suggestion for everyone with lay strategies especially at higher odds(over 3,0 lol). Look at laying to a liability. £10 is the usual amount. Which is about the same as a CS Lay at half time to £2 stakes so most of you should be used to that.
Then also look at 1% of a 1k bank(so £10 starting stake) Not as much profit as straight lays but less heart attacks, lower drawdowns and less stress. You will still be surprised at how quick these grow even so. Best to be the Turtle rather than the Hare. -
Thanks everyone. I've got the trial BF Bot Manager (as I'm sure I can bother John with any questions) and going to try and get my head around that first. In the meantime, I'll see how these HR strategies impact my current bank/ trading ability.
Once I'm happy with that I'll look into getting a VPS.
Thanks again

@dan-mackinnon Hi, make sure your VPS can run whatever Bot software you're planning. In English this normally means getting a Windows version so you can install the Bot software same as you would on a Windows PC.
-
@keith that's brilliant! Thanks for that. I'll have a look and will be in touch if I get stuck!

@dan-mackinnon In addition to what John has said, I'd also like to mention something that I think gets overlooked a lot when talking about automation. Getting a bot that does this stuff is really easy. I think often people see the word bot and automation and assume it must be something very complex and time consuming. And if you code it from scratch it is. But most of the modern automation software abstracts all the complexity away and makes it really straight forward. There is a little bit of a learning curve. But once you've figured out how it works you'll be able to build one of these "set and forget" bots in a few minutes.
Absolutely this. Most of my bots are variations on each other or the pre loaded examples. It is not rocket science. I mean if I can anyone can lol

@ian-parry @John-Folan thanks guys.
I feel quite happy with my football trading and looking to move into something else and possibly with a bot. I did try with fairbot for a while which worked fine once it was up and running. My only issue is leaving my laptop on all day, but speaking with our IT department I might be able to snag an old PC to use
Dan there is an alternative to that - rent a VPS. For around £10 a month you can get a VPS which is essentially a virtual PC which you log into and load the bot software on. It runs 24/7 and you can access it from any device with an internet connection. It never shuts down and you don't need to worry about power outages or internet connection going down. I use https://www.time4vps.com/ but there are plenty of others. Just make sure it's on a country that betfair allow.

I appreciate this might be a stupid question or one that doesn't have a clear answer.
Are the above set and forget strategies really set and forget if you have to enter at a set time prior to each race? Can you ever have a strategy that you place in the morning like you do with the football and check it in the evening, or are the strategies too reliant on odds movement? If you wanted that approach is it fair to say you'll have to use a bot?
Odds are king with horse racing. They move so much during the course of a day its ridiculous. So I would say you need a bot. I use one. I get my qualifiers in the morning. Add them to the bot and if they hit the right criteria odds wise and Number of runners wise at the entry point time it places the bet.
You cannot do this manually in the morning as so much can change during a day. Non runners can cause absolute havoc with a strategy for example.
