Hey Guys!
Curious to know if anyone has attempted much trading with basketball?
-
@sean-fitzgerald crickets my main thing and like to be involved when markets are moving .., so hearing your thoughts of trades late ish in games just makes sense and the 0.5 profit aswell as that can can be reached quite quickly as 5-0 runs can happen space of 40s as you know even laying both sides 1.2 ish could work .. possibly all team dependant . the 7-10th seed play in will make games competitive to the final reg season game
and no pro myself work giving it a nudge and to a smaller degree automation

@sean-fitzgerald love this book marking it ... i was very active nba years ago but didn't see much from members so shelved it .. your entry points very similar to what i was trying to attempt
other angles had in mind were two teams SPs 2.00 and one side off to a flyer to lay and get out when prices back to SP (alot like cricket and set laying tennis suppose that) also the few ticks strat in play thought was to lay team that just got bucket and team calls timeoutTime to jump back in think
Yeah love it @Nathan-Bennett. As I said I’m not an expert and fumbling around a little still. I like your angle around laying the team on the end of a scoring run. I did start trying to pull data on average scoring runs to try and determine entry points for a similar strategy to yours outlined above. I found it difficult to get the data in a manageable form.
Happy to chat more on this.

@sean-fitzgerald thanks for this Sean! I’m gonna be quiet on the forum for the weekend but will send you a proper PM about the above! Thanks for the reply, this sounds great and gives me some ideas!

@daniel-cooper - I trade it quite a bit. As @Martin-Futter said there are some similarities with short form cricket as there are generally momentum swings throughout matches (sometimes huge swings) which make it great for trading.
NBA is only comp I’ve found with decent liquidity. Nothing in college hoops or other countries but I also haven’t checked that for a while but doubt it’s changed.
Liquidity is mixed in NBA depending matches but overall pretty good albeit just on the match odds/money line market. I did have some ideas on match totals strategies but found not enough liquidity.
I’ve by no means mastered trading NBA and I’m continuing to tweak ideas and thoughts as I go but on the whole I am in front this NBA season so doing ok.
There’s a couple of ways I generally go...
-
I look to lay teams trading $1.25 or less where there is less than 8 points in it through 3Q or early 4Q. Threshold becomes less in 2nd half of 4Q so generally no more than 5-6 points. I generally trade out for half profit of original stake but also play it by ear a little at times.
-
In Play scalping - I like to look for opportunities to scalp 3-4 ticks during the match. Seems to be regulars who employ this strategy as you can see their orders on both sides and is easy to spot. Worthwhile watching how much liquidity is coming through in play as I’ve had a few matches of late where it’s been slow going to get matches which leaves exposure.
-
Lastly I do a lot of pre match scalping on NBA and this works well too.
Hope that helps a little

@daniel-cooper not sure if anyone does, I do remember one guy mentioning it at some point.
I think what you probably get is a lot of situations where the market acts like a match is over fairly early on because the favourite has a decent lead but it's amazing how quickly it can turn around (like cricket). You probably get good low odds lay opportunities at these times, what I would do is watch a few games and the markets and see what happens!

@martin-futter whats going to be my best way, other than this, of reaching out to anyone one the forum with knowledge on trading basketball?

@daniel-cooper not personally but I have been told there is real money to be made!
Oh yeah? Thats good to know! Its not the same idea, but have you seen the film Uncut Gems on Netflix? Its a fantastic film, Adam Sandler in a serious role as a gambling addict, he loves the basketball! Perhaps that was where the seed was planted for me...
Anyway, was watching some of the American basketball streams last night, and watching the odds. A small observation would be that the markets love a good over-reaction!
