Great day of tennis today, probably the best of the year as all of the last 16 players at Wimbledon in the men's and women's draw meet!
One match sticks out to me in terms of value and that is Gael Monfils v Kevin Anderson.
Monfils odds 2.2, Martin's true odds 2.0
Ok so not a huge margin of value but I am maybe being reserved in my valuation of Monfils here and there is an argument he should be odds on based on their historical data.
- Monfils leads the head to head a massive 5-0
- Anderson has only won 1 set in all of those matches
- Monfils impressively dispatched a similar opponent to Anderson in Sam Querrey in the last round
- As a good returner Monfils can neutralise the big serving South African
- Monfils is a very up and down player during a match so there is a good chance even if he loses that he trades much shorter
So, all in all Monfils seems value to me. You have to be weary of a big server on grass but this isn't the 90's anymore and clearly the surface and balls combo is a lot slower than it used to be. As ever, it is hugely important to watch the match and make sure Monfils is motivated and fully fit. If he is then I would be backing him.
