Another Trading Newbie
-
Hi Everyone,
Thought I'd post up and introduce myself. Joined here about a month ago, and been busy watching all the videos and learning material. Plan to tinker more with the football software now and get to grips with how to use it.
I'm Simon, originally from London, hence the Arsenal profile image, but now living in Leeds with the wife and kids. I'm an insurance broker by occupation, so risk management is a big part of my life. Hopefully that will translate to my trading journey!
In terms of trading itself, I would say I'm a novice. I have dabbled in sports betting over the years; sometimes winning, and sometimes losing. Started taking things seriously about 5 or 6 years ago, and set about a goal of proving to myself that it was possible to beat the bookie. So on that note, I spent a lot of time messing about with football data and trying out various simple models. I did stumble on something that had potential, but sadly it got scuppered by the Covid pandemic, and a lot of work pretty much got stopped in its tracks. But what I found was I was spending way too much time with stats (doing everything manually), without much in the way of tangible results.
Since September 2020, I got stuck into matched betting, and have been doing that exclusively since then, which has allowed me to generate a healthy bank roll. And as anyone who is familiar with matched betting will know, it has a short shelf life; I'm bonus restricted and stake restricted with every bookie account I have. Although hitting arbitrage opportunities is still generating a decent profit every month, its getting squeezed more and more with accounts getting zeroed and stakes getting more and more restricted. So I think very soon, its going to be a waste of time and the effort won't justify the reward.
I joined BTC after a some online research into what I call 'life after matched betting'. The videos on youtube by Ryan and Martin I found really informative, and the ethos of BTC seemed right up my street. The software sounded very appealing too, and looks great so far.
I'm hoping that with patience, effort and hard work, I can learn how to trade effectively and make a healthy profit over time.
I'd say my goals as of now are to find a group of strategies I can trade reliably - be that 'set and forget', and 'in play' too. I'd like to develop an ability to trade in play strategies, as have never really got involved with the in play side before. Value has always been a concept I had at the forefront of my mine when betting myself - and as I say, I dabbled in various ways to calculate my own odds for games I was analysing. I'd like to learn how to do that for in play strategies too, to make sure I'm taking value odds in play. Hopefully I can learn the ropes with that as I read more on the forum.
Good luck with your trading

@simon-brooker Excellent write up! Welcome to the forum!
I love seeing posts like this as well, people prepared to get stuck in and write a post like this tend to do well.
Love that! Love the goals you have too, anything I can do to help you get there I will.
Anything I can be doing?
